Croatia extends from a surface of 56 691 km2 with a total population of 4.8 million people. The population consists of 80% Croats (of which the majority is Roman Catholic), a minority are Serbs, Bosnians, Hungarians and Italians. The main population centers of Croatia Zagreb, the capital are (a little more than a million inhabitants), Osijek in the northeast of Croatia, the inland port of Rijeka and Split, located south.
The official language is Croatian, the alphabet is Latin. The total area comprises 113 680 km2.
Croatia is a central and Mediterranean country with 33 200 km2 of territorial waters. The lenght of coast is 5835 km, 4057 km are islands, islet and reef coastline. The number of islands, islets and reefs is 1778. The number of islands is 1185 and only 70 of those are inhabited. The Croatian coast has a Mediterranean climate, meaning warm dry summers and mild winters with an average 2600 hours sunshine a year – the Croatian coast is one of the sunniest coastlines in Europe. Central Croatia has a semi-highland and highland climate with warm summers and snowy winters.
